Preventing Ice Dams on Northern Nevada Homes
Warm days and freezing nights turn clogged gutters into ice. Here’s how gutters, downspouts, and roof heat all play a part.

Reno and Carson City winters often swing from sunny afternoons above freezing to nights in the teens. Snow melts on the roof during the day and refreezes at the cold edge overnight. Do that for a week and you get a ridge of ice that can push water back under the shingles.
Where gutters come in
Gutters don’t cause ice dams, but clogged gutters make them worse. When debris blocks the trough, snowmelt has nowhere to drain, so it sits and freezes. The added weight can pull gutters loose from the fascia.
A pre-winter checklist
- Clear gutters and downspouts after the last leaves drop
- Confirm downspouts discharge away from walkways that can ice over
- Look for sagging runs or loose hangers before snow adds weight
- Consider micro-mesh guards if pines or wind-blown debris fill your gutters
If ice dams show up every year, heat loss through the attic is usually part of the cause. It’s worth having a roofer or insulation contractor take a look alongside any gutter work.
